NIGHT EMPERORS is a series of high-realistic yet fantastical illustrations about nightlife that I created. Each artwork is hand-made and is a nocturnal scene showcasing bartenders, club owners, patrons, artists, promoters, performers, musicians, consumers, and all the hopeless insomniacs that make the New York nightlife so special.
MANHATTAN EDITION - 2020
The first edition focuses on Downtown Manhattan and was made during COVID, with the help of the DJ Orson as the scene curator. During four months of quarantine, I created more than 350 hand drawings. At night. This tremendous work was a huge challenge, but also a therapeutic way to escape the heavy reality: for the first time in our lives, we have seen the city that never sleeps, asleep. Millions of New Yorkers. No more people in the streets. No more hugs. No more smiles. No more parties. No more disco. Still. Memories, art, and hope. This is an ode to nightlife when it does not exist anymore, for all the night owls that we miss. THEY ARE THE NIGHT EMPERORS. The clubs highlighted are Lola, Le Bain, Paul’s Baby Grand, Soho Grand, China Chalet, Et Al, Casablanca, and The Box. On 01.14.2021, the project became an INSIDE OUT ACTION, the global art initiative founded by JR.
BROOKLYN EDITION - 2021
The second edition focuses on Brooklyn spots, with the help of the talent agent and nightlife expert Phoebe Miller. The first club highlighted is Pony Boy, an iconic bar and club of Greenpoint, famous for its great funky soul music, incredible food, and underground crowd.
